With over 20 years in the Canberra building industry, Quality Building Services (QBS) are your specialist outdoor living builders. They can build decks to any size or shape that you require using quality materials and lasting finishes. Quality Building Services pride themselves on not just creating an enjoyable place to rest but great spaces to entertain your family and friends.

Deck design is important. You may like to consider different features to suit your lifestyle and make your deck unique like building seating into the new deck to create sitting areas or adding different levels of paving and plants to create interest. You may also have to consider adding moisture barriers between the soil and timber using brick garden edging or heavy duty plastic.

So where to start when planning a deck area?

1. Work out where you want it and how big you want it to be.

Consider which furniture and plants you may use in the area. How much space will you need? Will there be a 6 or 12 place table setting. What size is the BBQ? Would you like to include a Day bed, pot plants, bar fridge, or deck chairs?

2. How much can you afford to spend?

Once you have worked out what you need in terms of a deck and patio roof and you have a budget to work with, you can now look at materials. There are so many available and they all offer different advantages and disadvantages. See decking materials for information about your options.

3. What materials do you want to use?

What sort of look are you going for? When considering materials, think about the existing home and its colours, do you want timber or composite decking, wide or thin decking boards, what sort of timber do you want to use?

Hardwoods

Quality Building Services source quality, traditional timber balustrade in natural hardwood or paintable treated pine for the perfect match to your existing home. They source the highest quality timber decking including stunning mixed gum, Kwila and Merbau. A traditional timber deck makes a grand, impressive feature, a centre for entertainment and family time, and can also make a significant difference to the sale value of your home. QBS can help you to design the best timber deck for your space or simply build from the plans you have.

Hardwood decking is highly durable and hard wearing. Australian Hardwood is a reddish colour and imported hardwoods and lighter and longer in length. Timber requires regular deck maintenance.

Treated pine decking is affordable, readily available, easy to cut and fasten and will withstand rot, fungus and termites. Maintenance is low with only a power clean required every year and a fresh coat of paint or stain every 2-3 years. The disadvantage is that treated pine moves and is prone to warping so you need to space the planks accordingly.

Composite Decking

Composite decking is made from a combination of wood and plastic materials. It is maintenance free, resistant to rot and termites and is UV stable. However being a man made material, it is prone to scratching.

Insulated Patio Roofing

A closed in insulated patio roof allows you to install down lights and becomes an extension of the room the roof is attached to.

Colorbond Patio Roofing

Colorbond steel patio roofing is commonly used on roofs for its durability, longevity and its flexibility allowing all you to create almost any shape that you desire. Colorbond also has 20 designer colours to choose from.

Polycarbonate Patio Roof

This type of roof is popular because it lets in the light while reflecting away heat and harmful UV rays, making the patio very comfortable during summer.

Thatched Patio Roof

The Balinese style thatched roof is made from grass and provides a tranquil tropical look. This option is particularly popular on freestanding pergolas and patios.

Aluminium

Aluminium framed decks are experiencing a dramatic increase in popularity as the price has remained stable in recent years, making it an extremely attractive option. An aluminium framed pergola or carport looks very similar to a timber framed structure, except the beams are powder-coated for a very long life. There is no maintenance required for aluminium structures as they will not rust.

Canberra decks can be built to compliment contemporary, hip and stylish new homes. Quality Building Services source the latest in wire balustrade for that chic, minimalist look or glass if you require a pool protection solution to your outdoor area.
